Installing a 69/70 Convertible Roll Bar in a 65/66 Mustang Convertible

Picture
I have always thought that the 60/70 Shelby Convertible Roll Bars were sexy but that's as far as my simple brain ever went with it. We had a customer ask......"Hey man can we put a 69 Shelby roll bar in my Mustang?"  I just had that deer in the headlight look with an intelligent  reply of ahhhhhhh ummmmm weeeeell......I don't know. I'll get back to ya on that. With a little research I found that Branda had a kit you could buy but not for a 65-66. So we ordered the kit with the idea that we could make it work. As luck would have it we did just that so here is how we did it.

Picture
Remove your original interior quarter panel.

Seperate the arm rest padded portion from the metal panel.

Cut the bottom portion off the metal panel.

Install the metal panel back onto the car.

Take a piece of metal apprx 2 to 3 inches long and form to this shape

Attach the fabricated brkt to the metal panel

The kit includes these qtr window shaft extensions. Due to the positioning of the replacement interior qtr panel these extensions are required. You also get two support brackets to help keep the extension from moving due to its increased length. In this particular installation we are doing the installation on a car that has the power window upgrade. The same process would be used on the original manual type.  It was necassary for us to increase the hole size on the shaft extension on the regulator side. This is normally connected to the original shaft using a dowl pin after you drill a hole all the way through the original regulator shaft. Because we were dealing with electric windows and the regulator is the switch we did not want to drive a dowl pin in fear of damaging the switch so we used a screw instead.

Drill a hole through the shaft and use a dowl pin to secure.

Because this install had a electric switch to activate the power window we used a screw in lieu of a dowl pin

The support brkt supplied with the kit is too long you will need to cut it shorter and re-bend.

The roll bar comes as one unit with two legs that are seperate you need to install the roll bar and find the correct position. Mark the location and tac weld your legs in position Its important to test fit as you progress.
Picture
Once we found the correct location for the legs we spaced them away from the interior panel using paint sticks. This will allow enough clearance for the roll bar to slide over the legs.
Picture
This was not included in the kit but we decided to weld in a brace on the legs.
Picture
Lay your new interior panel in place paying special attention to the fit of the entire panel . Now mark the back edge by the covertible top and remove some material a little at a time to improve the fit.
Picture
Install your new inner panels with self tapping screws
Picture
The self tapping screws are installed on the front edge you will see indentations where they go. Also on the top secure to the brkt that was fabricated earlier

Drop the roll bar in and stand back and admire the new look.
